A family of five is displaced tonight, following a house fire in east Erie.
It broke out around 5:30 p.m. Friday, inside of a home on East 28th and German Streets.

Firefighters rushed to the scene to find heavy smoke and flames shooting out of a second floor bedroom.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Mike Fahey, firefighters conducted an aggressive search of the burning home, after receiving reports of a 4-year-old girl trapped inside.

It turns out the child was actually up the street, said Fahey.

Fahey says the possible entrapment added a greater sense of urgency to extinguish the fire.

“That changes the scenario altogether,” said Fahey.  “Now we're not just worried about the fire extending and getting bigger, (we're) aggressively looking for anyone that's in there.  Small children are hard to find sometimes.”

No one was hurt.  A cause of the fire is under investigation.
