Members of the community are honoring the Erie firefighter who lost his life following a car accident in Florida.
On Thursday, hundreds of family, friends, and fellow firefighters made their way to Bayfront Convention Center for the viewing of 44-year-old Steve McKenrick.
McKenrick passed away last Thursday, following a car crash in Frostproof, Florida. The crash also claimed the life of his 71-year-old mother Kathryn McKenrick and left his sister Janice Servick, 49, critically injured.
McKenrick leaves behind a wife and two children.
Those close to McKenrick, described him as an exceptional firefighter, a loving father, and a great friend.
"Steve came on with a big smile on his face, and always wanted to help people, and that's what he did,” said Tony Pol, former chief of the Erie Fire Department. “He enjoyed helping people, that's what this job is about. He did it to the best. He helped his family, helped everybody, so we're here now to help the family.”
A funeral service for McKenrick will be held at St. Jude the Apostle Church on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
