Presque Isle Preparing for Holiday Weekend, More Lifeguards Working This Year
Maintenance crews have been working overtime at Presque Isle to get the park ready for the Memorial Day weekend that begins this Friday.
It is the start of the park's busy season.
About three dozen park employees have been busy cutting grass and sprucing up the park.
Much of the focus has been along the beaches.
A groomer is busy smoothing out the sand and picking up debris that has washed ashore, a lot more debris than normal.
Park Operations Manager Matt Greene said, "We have had lots of debris on the beaches. That is one of our main pushes in May, to get the debris off the beaches, get them groomed, get things ready for the swim season. So that really has been the push in the last month."
The park will have five or six beaches open for the holiday weekend.
But a major improvement project will keep beaches 7 and 8 closed until mid June.
And for the first time in several years, after stepped up recruiting, the park will have its full compliment of 55 lifeguards.
