Students at East Middle School celebrated National Farm to School Month on Thursday.

The family and consumer science class teamed up with Metz Culinary for a beet tasting event.

They worked with Metz representatives to choose and cook recipes using beets grown at school gardens.

Erie's Public Schools were awarded a $23,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to create a Farm to School program for its 15 schools.

National Farm to School Month encourages communities and organizations to celebrate food education, school gardens and the use of healthy, local ingredients in school meals.
