Former Ashtabula Housing Inspector Pleads No Contest to Stealing Money from Residence
A former housing inspector with the City of Ashtabula will not spend any time behind bars for stealing money from a vacant residence.
John F. Artuso pleaded no contest to grand theft, the Ashtabula County Prosecutor's Office announced Monday. A charge of theft in office was dismissed in exchange for the plea.
He was then sentenced to two years of community control or probation.
The money was taken Dec. 1, 2017 from a vacant residence in the 4300 block of West Ave. in Ashtabula, according to the Prosecutor's Office.
Artuso removed and allowed others to take money and other property from the residence. Investigators initially said it totaled between $7,500 and $150,000 when Artuso was indicted on May 22, but the Prosecutor's Office said the exact amount remains unknown.
It reportedly happened as he was preparing the property for potential demolition while working as housing inspector.
