On Tuesday, one of the oldest charter schools in the city, the Charter School of Excellence, held their Open House. It gave both parents and students an up-close look at what they have to offer. It also gave us a chance to talk to faculty about the possibility of more charter schools in the area.
Just last month, two groups went before the Erie School Board, with proposals for new charter schools in the area. Parents and faculty members we spoke with at the Charter School of Excellence Open House both say they can see the why there is want for more charter schools in the area.
"There's a lot of different things happening in education right now and there's a lot of different things that we're offering in the ways students learn and the way students grow," said Assistant Principal at the Charter School of Excellence Skills Center Program Asa McCullen. "The way students are learning has changed, so its good for the charter schools to be able to facilitate some of that change."
"I think they should have as many charter schools as they possibly can," said Richelle Delp, who has kids in charter schools. "I think the schools need help. The classes are too big and at charter schools, these kids have options and they're open to their options."
Currently, the Charter School of Excellence has three campuses, two high schools and one middle school. Faculty there say they don't see any competition for students if any of the newly proposed charters get approved. They've been embedded in the community for 10 years, and they have a great foundation to help students.
