It costs a lot of money to study to be a dentist, doctor or pharmacist and a big benefit auction in Erie is helping students toward that goal. The  21st annual LECOM Student Scholarship Fund Auction brought a record crowd to the Bayfront Convention Center Saturday evening.  Up for auction were works of art, tickets to major events, plus collectibles and memorabilia from a Mario Lemieux jersey to an autographed guitar. All of the items were donated to the cause.

Organizers say the big turnout supports students on all three LECOM campuses, in Erie and Greensburg, Pennsylvania and in Bradenton, Florida.  LECOM President Dr. John Ferretti said, "It's a record crowd tonight, over 1,000 people attending. This is our 21st auction and we expect to raise a lot of money. Trying to become a health care professional; dentist, physician, pharmacist, is extremely expensive and this helps lessen the burden on these young people with regard to indebtedness."

Last year alone, LECOM provided 3.7 million dollars in scholarships to about one thousand students.
