District Attorney's Office Refreshes Law Enforcement on Search and Seizure
Law seminar
The Erie County District Attorney's office offered a seminar to area law enforcement, to bring them up to date on Pennsylvania's search and seizure laws. Dozens of officers participated, from state and local police to campus officers and border patrol.
The DA's office does this annually, to refresh officers on what they can and cannot do, when it comes to searches. They reviewed last year's change in the law, allowing warrant-less vehicle searches. It was information they could now update with a year of specific examples.
Assistant District Attorney Roger Bauer leads the seminar. He said, "Well it's always important to do these trainings so the officers can have this information, so that when they're out there doing their job, they can execute the job properly and when the evidence comes to court, we'll be able to keep that evidence."
Lt. Mike Bauer, an evidence expert the Millcreek Police Department said, "With our patrol officers that are making traffic stops and developing probable cause that there may be drugs in the vehicle this allows us, gives us guidance as to what we can do to go into the cars and search."
The officers also evaluated real cases, that will help them as they make split second decisions, in the field.
