Local Priest Apologizes For Degrading Tweet About SV Grads

ERIE--- "I was disgusted," Scott Peterson says.
Peterson was disgusted at the derogatory words that Cathedral Prep fans made against Strong Vincent fans during a football game last month.
"They were chanting stuff like, Go back to the hood," Peterson adds.
Appalled by it all, Peterson took to the Erie Times News. He sent a letter to the editor and called Cathedral Prep fans out. Some of the letter wrote: "It's unseemly bordering on disgraceful to see privileged white boys acting in such a manner toward opposing players and fans."
Days after the letter was published, Father John Detisch, the Erie Police Chaplin and Pastor of Saint Jude The Apostle Church, fired back. He wrote a response letter standing behind Cathedral Prep and how most students who attend Prep are not privileged.
The drama did not stop there. Instead, the conversation spilled over to Twitter.
A Twitter user in support of Strong Vincent, mentioned that someone needed to show how many Doctors, Lawyers, CEO's and Businessmen, have come out of the school in the last 50 years.
In response to that tweet, Father John replied saying, "Please Now. If any, they are probably all in jail."
"It was a very rude comment," says Anne Marie Welsh, Director of Communication for the Diocese of Erie. "He, himself, said it was mean. We suggested that he take down the Tweet and he, in fact, closed his Twitter. He decided that it was not a good venue for him."
The Diocese of Erie took to Facebook, posting an apology from Father Detisch himself.
The apology wrote, in part:
"Two images came to my mind at the same time, and made my heart sink: My late mother, Jeanette, a proud SV alumnus … and, the faces of all the kids from SV that belonged to my parishes in which I minister. To all of those kids, the present ones, the tons of friends I have that are very proud of their SV diploma, the great friends who have taught there, and, especially, my mother in God’s glory, I am profoundly sorry, and ask for your forgiveness."
"It's just a good lesson for all of us that social media is a very strong channel and we have to treat it with responsibility," Welsh adds.
The Diocese says in will take no disciplinary action.
