Erie is mourning the death of John Horan, longtime leader of the Erie Housing Authority.
He died Thursday at the age of 73, after a long illness
He headed the authority for nearly 40 years, pushing for improvements to help families and seniors who live in apartments and high rise complexes.
Leaders who worked with Horan over the years describe him as a tough, hard-working leader, never afraid to stand up for his beliefs.
Barbara Chaffee of the Erie Regional Chamber and Growth Partnership said, "He was so committed to his residents and this community. And he never hesitated to say what he thought or what he believed in."
Mayor Joe Sinnott said, "Anybody who worked with John knew he was a very strong advocate not only for public housing but for anything he believed in."
Bishop Dwane Brock, Erie Housing Authority Board Treasurer said, "A certain greatness has slipped away for the Erie community. A person who stood up for principle. What he taught us all was to stand up for what is right, to be a spokesperson for those who cannot speak for themselves."
Horan worked at Erie City Hall for Mayor Lou Tullio before taking over the top job at the authority.
Viewing for John Horan is scheduled for Monday 4-7 p.m. and Tuesday 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m at the Quinn Funeral Home at 728 West 9th Street.
A funeral mass is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Cathedral.
