Pennsylvania Senators Bob Casey and Pat Toomey are recognizing a police detective for his heroic work.

During a ceremony at the Capitol Thursday, Baltimore County Detective Roy Gibbs received the Congressional Badge of Bravery.

Gibbs lives in Hanover, Pa., near the Maryland border.

In 2017, Gibbs responded to an armed robbery where he rescued a fellow officer who was shot in the line of duty.

Attorney General William Barr named Gibbs as one of just 18 recipients for this award.

"It's truly an honor," said Gibbs. "It's emotionally overwhelming to be here in the Capitol getting an award. I never would have thought 30 years ago when I was sitting in criminal justice class that I would be here one day."

Maryland Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen were also on hand for Thursday's ceremonies.
