Erie Otters: We Want to be Part of the Solution in this City
The Erie Otters say the events of last weekend have prompted team officials to reflect on its role in the community.
The headquarters of the Otters was one of the buildings damaged by vandals during rioting Saturday night.
A Molotov cocktail was thrown through the front window causing a fire in the building. Firefighters were able to respond to the blaze before flames spread. Damage was minimal.
Team officials started to reflect on the topics of racial equality as they cleaned up the damage.
The team issued a statement saying it wants to be a part of the solution in this city.
"For now, we're going to listen to the voices that kind of been ignored for so long," said Otters Director of Marketing Aaron Cooney. "We want to be a part of that change to progress Erie forward in this unity and where it needs to be."
The Otters have no plans to move back into the damaged building. They are waiting for new team headquarters to be finished as part of the renovations at UPMC Park.
