Local Expert Discusses Johnson and Johnson Vaccine

The U.S. could have a new vaccine on the market by the end of the week, and you might even get a shot within the next week to 10 days.
The Johnson and Johnson candidate could be granted emergency use authorization as soon as this weekend.
Local experts say if that happens, it's a big step in the right direction.
The Johnson and Johnson vaccine only requires one dose, and it can be stored in a regular refrigerator.
Experts also say do not be scared of the published 66 percent effectiveness rate.
That might seem low, but that vaccine was tested against variants, and Pfizer and Moderna's weren't.
Plus, this vaccine is incredibly effective, almost perfect, at preventing serious illness and death.

"If you look at the rates of preventing hospitalization and death, it goes up with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, and that's what we're trying to prevent," said Becky Dawson, PhD., epidemiologist and Erie News Now Contributor. "We're trying to maintain this virus, not eradicate it. That's not an achievable goal."

Experts say the Johnson and Johnson vaccine could be a major step toward achieving herd immunity, with 20 million doses promised by the end of next month, and 100 million by the end of June.
