Investigators: Fight Preceded Fatal Shooting in Warren County

Pennsylvania State Police have charged a man in a fatal shooting in Warren County Monday night. Investigators said a fight preceded the homicide.

Hagger S. Brewer Sr., 57, has been charged with homicide and other related charges.

Troopers were called to a residence in the 24000 block of Cold Springs Rd. in Spring Creek Township around 7:35 p.m. for a shooting.

At the scene, they found Victor V. Vantassel III, 57, dead, according to State Police.

Vantassel's girlfriend reported the shooting to police, investigators said. She said Brewer approached her behind the house and started to yell at her, adding Vantassel was asleep but woke up because of the yelling and went out in the yard, the affadavit of probable cause said.

She told troopers the pair started yelling at each other in a fight that turned physical, according to State Police. During the fight, she said Brewer was on top of Vantassel when Brewer pulled out a gun and fired, hitting Vantassel in the abdomen.

Brewer also called 911 to say, "Somebody attacked me in the yard, and I shot him," according to the affadavit of probable cause.

During an interview with State Police, he said Vantassel came at him and kicked his feet out from under him, causing him to fall to the ground. Brewer said he was on his back, and Vantassel tried to punch him twice, which he blocked. When Vantassel tried to punch him a third time, Brewer told investigators he drew his gun and shot Vantassel.

Brewer is behind bars in the Warren County Prison without bond.
