Residents and businesses located within the 814 area code are required to dial 10-digits for all telephone calls starting today, Saturday, April 3, according to the Pennsylvania Utility Commission (PUC).
This affects cell phone contacts, medical alert systems, alarms and any other systems that automatically make calls.
Anyone who tries to make a call using only seven digits will receive a recorded message asking the caller to hang up and redial using the full 10-digit number.
The 814 area code was established in 1947 as one of the state's original area codes. Numbers using the area code are now running out.
The new 582 area code will be used starting May 1, 2021.
