A new housing option is available for people aged 65 and older in Crawford County.

The Meadville-Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday on what is now known as "Vernon Square."

The new, moderate-income housing option is located in the former Days Inn, located at 18360 Conneaut Lake Road in Meadville.

It will be operated by the Wesbury Retirement Community, which purchased the former hotel in 2017.

As an influx of baby boomers reach retirement age over the next decade, Wesbury leaders wanted to address the lack of housing options for people who do not qualify for subsidized housing and cannot afford, or are not interested in, living in a retirement complex.

A multitude of renovations were completed at the new facility, including paint and a new roof, the addition of a pool, an on-site dog park, along with elevators and a secure entrance.

Phase one of the project includes 15 apartments. It features one- and two-bedroom apartments furnished with all appliances. In phases two and three of the project, Wesbury leaders say a total of 80 units will be available.

Residents are already living on-site and applications for more tenants are currently being accepted.
