A project to resurface a portion of Routes 5 and 89 in eastern Erie County began this week, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced Friday.

The $3.9 million project includes the paving of 9.37 miles of Route 5 and Route 89 in Lawrence Park, North East and Harborcreek townships, and North East Borough.

8.03 miles of Route 5 will be resurfaced from west of the intersection with Beach Road in Harborcreek Township to east of Cemetery Road in North East Township.

1.34 miles of Route 89 will be resurfaced from south of Gibson St. in North East Borough to Route 5 in North East Township.

Along with milling and paving, the project will include curb ramps, drainage, guiderail, ditch cleaning and pavement marking updates.

Temporary lane restrictions could result in some traffic delays, according to PennDOT.

The project is expected to be completed by August.
