PennDOT has been plowing the roads constantly since the snow began Sunday evening.

The biggest challenge is the snow has been non-stop, too.

The local PennDOT district covers Erie, Crawford, Warren, Forest, Venango and Mercer counties, which have all have been hit by inches and inches of heavy wet snow.

In the six county district, there are 8,422 "snow miles" to plow. This takes in the double lanes of interstates and includes lots of secondary county and rural routes, too.

There are 167 plow routes, and drivers specialize in their areas, so they learn how to get through it as quickly and safely as possible.

Erie News Now asked PennDOT officials what's the best thing people can do to help those plow and salt trucks do their job.

"The best thing they can do during a storm like this is stay home," said Jill Harry, PennDOT. "If you can avoid traveling, that makes it a lot easier for us to plow the roads. If you can't avoid traveling then, you need to make sure you're giving yourself extra time to get where you need to go. If you get behind a truck that is actively plowing, you're going to want to stay behind that truck at least 6 car lengths, so travel behind them, give them lots of space to do their job and clear that road off for you."
