Westwood Racquet Club: Giving You the Business

During the winter, the only indoor tennis club in Erie, Crawford and Warren counties is a busy place. It's a springboard to local athletes and an outlet for community members.

The Westwood Racquet Club in Millcreek is the subject of this weeks Giving You the Business Report.

Tennis. Its the livelihood of the Westwood Racquet Club where nearly a dozen instructors help a wide range of skill sets. Rick Sertz has been teaching and coaching tennis for decades.

From instructing senior citizens, to the 12 high school teams that utilize Westwood.

Longtime tennis player and coach, Andy Findlay is in charge of Westwood's junior program and helps instruct students of all ages, including Jen Kilgas's son.

"I play the cardio tennis a couple of times a month. My son takes private lessons and he does the elite team" said Kilgas.

Those cardio tennis sessions are popular from teens, on. When it comes to ages, Westwood's youngest client is three-years-old. The oldest, in their 90's.

"We've got people in excess of 90 playing tennis, doubles, and there's a lot of breaks out there but this is a sport for a lifetime" Findlay said.

Westwood was the first indoor club to be built in Erie in the heyday of tennis - the 1970's. The late, famous player Bobby Riggs even visited in 1977, about 5 years after the club opened.

Westwood's evolution allows the viewing of matches - from anywhere.

"We have cameras on all seven courts that are one angled camera where you can steam matches or lessons."

Having fun, being challenged, and learning the game.

Westwood Racquet Club is also home to several tournaments every year.
