The City of Titusville now has a new trash collector following the closure of Raccoon Refuse.

Mayor Jon Crouch declared a public health emergency for Titusville on Thursday afternoon.

In doing so, he was able to skip the bidding process and hire Tri-County Industries to collect the city's garbage.

Ten days ago, the city's former contractor Raccoon Refuse informed the mayor it was closing and no longer picking up the city's trash.

For the past week, city employees and the public works department took it upon themselves and collected the city's garbage.

The new agreement comes with a sense of relief.

"It has been pretty busy trying to figure out what to do," said Crouch. "It was a little overwhelming to our city employees to be able to do this on a constant basis. It would be impossible because it would divert them from what they were doing."

Residents are urged to put their garbage out Friday night. It will be picked up Saturday.

The city will then go back to a Tuesday and Thursday collection schedule next week.
