Going Solar: Erie Central Fire Department Flips the Switch on Solar Energy

The Erie Central Fire Department will be powered entirely by solar energy thanks to a unique solar project.

Members of the City met at the firehouse on 12th and Sassafras to "flip the switch" on solar energy.

The project was in collaboration with Houston-based solar panel company, Green Mountain Energy.

They'll be able to store up to 7 days worth of power in battery storage for emergencies, something only three firehouses in the country have so far.

"It's been in the works for several years and there's been a lot of work going on it. I've been supportive all the way," said Erie Mayor Joe Schember. "I think they move as quickly forward as they can. You know, this is only the third fire station in the country that has solar power now. So, it's a relatively new thing, but it seems to work pretty well. And again, we're hoping to do more of it going forward."

The 225 panels will provide up to 88 kilowatts of power to the station, and any excess electricity can be put back into the grid.
