Crews are working long hours this week to get Presque Isle ready for the Memorial Day weekend, the traditional start of the busy summer season. There's a lot to do, and not much time to do it. And in recent years, tight budgets have led to a smaller number of maintenance people. So there are fewer people to do the same work. Much of the focus now is on getting the beaches ready for the start of the swimming season on Saturday. Crews today were busy putting lifeguard chairs in place. And this week, workers will have to clean driftwood and other debris and groom the beaches. Other crews are busy cutting grass, a job that is more difficult than usual because of all the rain this spring.
