Erie Council Takes Final Vote on Mayoral Pay Hike

It's now official. Erie City Council has adopted a resolution raising the salary of the mayor from $65,000 to $95,000 a year.  It takes effect in 2014.  It took three votes to get the ordinance written and adopted.  The outcomes of all three votes were the same, four votes in favor, three votes against.

"I think it's a gross injustice that the mayor makes less than 82 of his employees in the city. And if you throw in overtime, you have a lot of beat policemen, who do great work themselves, but are making more than the mayor," said Councilman Joe Schember.

Before the final vote, Councilman Pat Cappabianca attempted to amend the ordinance. His amendment lowered the raise, making the salary $75,000 instead of $95,000.  And,  the raise would be piecemeal, in $2500 increments, extending from the year 2014 to 2017.

The amendment failed.  Cappabianca was not surprised.

"I could have told you. I'm Nostradamus. I can predict what's going to happen here. He had the 4 votes no matter what happens,"  Cappabianca said.

Many people, including some citizens who spoke against the hike, believe it was Joe Schember who rallied his colleagues to raise the salary of the mayor.  The citizens think Schember wants to run for mayor in 2013.  12News asked Schember if he, indeed, has his eye on the Mayor's Office.

He said, "I think anyone who is on council probably has a thought at one point or another about possibly being mayor. All seven of us. I think we'd be lying if we said we didn't think about that. But it's not a burning passion with me. It's something if the opportunity came up at some point in the future, I would certainly consider."

Schember says he hopes current Mayor Joe Sinnott runs again when his term is up in 2013.
