Tuesday was a wild and windy day around the area, with wind gusts up near 60-miles-an-hour recorded at Erie International Airport. The wind brought down a big tree branch on East 6th street, just as 69-year-old Allport Johnson was driving by in his van. The heavy branch smashed out his windshield and left him with a compound leg fracture. His car drifted nearly a block before coming to stopping at 6th and Reed.
Gwenetta Dickens was walking by saw and saw it happen. "I was walking down the street and he was coming east and the tree branch fell right there on top of his car, it went through the car and thru the window which made everything inside the car fall down on him."
Dickens and her son helped Johnson out of the car and called 9-1-1. Emergycare transported Johnson to UPMC Hamot, where he's listed in fair condition tonight.
Emergency crews responded to lots of other wind related troubles. A big tree came down on some power lines in the 1300 block of West 9th Street. No one got hurt.
And a utility pole snapped near its base in the 700 block of East 13th causing some power lines to droop. Penelec crews were called to make repairs.
