Fallen Police Officers Honored At Annual Memorial Service
Local officers killed in the line of duty are being honored for paying the ultimate sacrifice.
Police officers from across the area, along with dozens of citizens gathered at Perry Square in downtown Erie for the annual police memorial service to remember the areas fallen officers. During the 30 minute ceremony, a flag was flown at half staff and a wreath was placed on a memorial as the names of 14 fallen city and county officers were read, including Richard Berchick, an Erie police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1991.
"My husband Richard was very dedicated to his service and community and I'm proud of that, and I'm proud of the service that they continue everyday," said Lysa Berchick-Lagan.
Monday was designated as Fraternal Order of Police Officer Memorial Day.
