It's the eve of the D-10 soccer playoffs for the Villa Maria Victors, so how are they preparing? By helping others. Sunday evening the Villa girls soccer team volunteered to serve those in need at a regular Sunday supper hosted by downtown churches. The meal is served to help those who might otherwise go hungry. Some of the people eat at the Emmaus Soup Kitchen during the week.
On Sunday, the meal was served at The Cathedral of Saint Paul on West 7th Street. Members of the soccer team not only helped to served the meal, but also passed out goodie bags with snacks and care products for the guests to take home. Cathedral Administrator, Cass Shimek said, "I think it's an eye opener for them to understand what they have and have to give...and just to share those blessings and be a blessing to others." Head Coach Afrim Latifi said it's all about learning and experiencing what they have that others may not. "These girls are going to grow up and touch other people's lives and that helps us bond as a team," he added.
Shimek, whose daughter is on the team, says they didn't know when they signed up that it would be the night before the playoffs, but they were happy to keep their commitment.
