A political newcomer announced today he is running for Erie City Council.

Thirty-one year old Rob Mahrt is seeking the Democratic nomination in the May primary.

He made the announcement in front of a crowd of friends and supporters at the Erie Maritime Museum.

Mahrt works in Erie for a national consulting firm, and has lived in Dayton, Ohio and Washington, D.C.

He is married to Rebecca Styn who has run in the past for both Erie City Council and Erie County Council.

Mahrt says creating jobs and improving neighborhoods are his top priorities.

He said, "Definitely anything that brings more jobs into the region. I think everybody agrees. That is very important and fighting blight in our neighborhoods."

Four of the seven seats on council are open this year.

Two incumbents will not be running.

David Brennan says he will not seek another term, while Curtis Jones cannot run, because of term limits.
