Gannon University student Michael Haas is joining the race for Erie City Council.

The 25 year old announced his candidacy on the democratic ticket Saturday afternoon at Dramashop in the Renaissance Center.

Haas said he wants to engage millennials in the community and represent those under 30 in local government.

The candidate said he hopes to keep college students in Erie after they graduate and foster entrepreneurship to help strengthen the city's economy.

He also wants to promote open government by making more information accessible through the city's website.

Haas graduated from Mercyhurst Preparatory School and says he has been active in several local non-profits.
