High school students replaced college students today on the campus of Penn State Behrend.

It was the 2017 science Olympiad, held during Behrend's spring break.

More than 400 students from 34 high schools in the region competed for prizes.

Students coming from as far away as Brookville and Farrell.

The competition is similar to a track meet.

Teamwork is stressed and students with many different interests and academic strengths work together.

Organizers say it takes a lot of preparation for the teams to be ready for the event.

Penn State Behrend Physics Professor Chuck Yeung said, "A lot of students are putting 15-20 hours in either building equipment, building devices to be tested here, or studying for the particular subjects, the lab events. So it takes a lot of effort."

Winning teams receive trophies.

And the top four teams in each division go on to the state science Olympiad.
