PA House to Vote on Funding for Unemployment Centers

Posted: Updated:

Pennsylvania's troubled unemployment compensation system might soon get some financial relief.

The state Senate recently passed a proposal that would free up $15 million, which would be used to improve services at the state's unemployment compensation centers.

In December, the Department of Labor and Industry laid off nearly 500 workers and closed three call centers, following a funding dispute between Governor Tom Wolf and Senate Republicans.

The Erie center wasn't closed, but there are still no in-person services being offered at that building.

The layoffs and closures have led to unprecedented wait times at CareerLink centers across the state, including the one locally.

The bill must now be approved by the state House of Representatives.

Representative Ryan Bizzarro says the bill is a step in the right direction, but there needs to be a long-term solution.

"If they have a solution to fix or temporarily fix what's going on with our unemployment laws, and what's going on with this debacle at the unemployment office, the Department of Labor and Industry, then I'm going to be supportive of that, said Bizzarro.  However, I'd like to see more of a permanent fix."

As of now, it is unclear exactly when the House will vote on the legislation.
