ERIE, Pa. - Four area high school seniors are now the recipients of a scholarship given by the Italian American Women’s Association of Erie.

It’s a group that works all year long to raise funds for the scholarships.

Young ladies received the recognition Monday night in a Ceremony at the Colony Catering on 12th St. in Millcreek.

The IAWA, founded more than 30 years ago, works to foster Italian heritage. Raising money each year for scholarships is part of the foundation of the organization.

The recipients are chosen anonymously based on an essay written about their heritage, school and community involvement.

This year‘s award recipients are Kathryn DeDionisio of Mercyhurst Prep who received the Founders Scholarship for $2,500.

Caroline Upham of Iroquois high school, Elizabeth Tirak From Villa Maria, and Julia Bennet of Fort leBoeuf all received $2,000 each.

This was the organization’s 19th scholarship banquet.
