Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) completed its purchase of WMCE 88.5 FM from Mercyhurst University on July 9, it announced during a news conference Tuesday morning.

LECOM is officially able to take ownership of the radio station now that the sale has been approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). It had been operating the station as LECOM Radio since March 1 under a Public Service Operating Agreement.

LECOM paid Mercyhurst University $275,000 for the non-commercial radio station, according to documents filed with the FCC.

LECOM Radio will continue to play the greatest hits of the '60s, '70s and '80s, according to General Manager Jim Schaffner.

“We brought back and kept on the air many familiar DJs of local radio past and present,” Schaffner said.  “Fans of Captain Dan Geary have been listening to him spin the hits in the mornings Monday through Friday since LECOM radio began managing 88.5 FM.”

Captain Dan will be joined by the legendary Johnny Holiday, Commander Bill Hale and Dr. Denny Woytek.

Nationally known talent Wayne Smith and Rick Johnson, as well as Mighty Mike Langer and Erie’s own Ms. Terri Bohen, will takeover on the weekends. Big Al Knight fills the airwaves from midnight to 6 a.m.

LECOM will also promote the college and its health affiliates.

“During the broadcasts, LECOM Radio listeners will learn about the healthcare services and opportunities available to them and their families,” said Schaffner. “As we say – music, medicine and memories; each and every day.”
