The 8th annual Blues for Shoes fundraiser was hosted Sunday afternoon into the night at the Sandbar on West 8th St. Local musicians came together to play blues music while raising money that will be spent on school supplies for community children.

Maurice Troop has been an educator for 20 years and says he sees kids miss the first week of school because they don't have the supplies they need. "They didn't have school uniforms, they didn't have shoes, they didn't have clothes or school supplies. So,  if we can help them be in school that first day and eliminate that need that they have, then we're doing our part," Troop said.

Last year's fundraiser raised enough to give out 600 bags of school supplies, and organizers are hoping to exceed that this year. The giveaway will be at Odessa's Place on West 18th St. September 1st.

Anyone wanting to donate funds or school supplies to the cause can get in touch with Odessa's Place at  (814) 899-3457.
