The City of Erie is officially taking additional measures to address aggressive panhandling.

In a 5-to-2 vote, Erie City Council Wednesday approved an ordinance prohibiting aggressive panhandling in downtown Erie.

Councilman Bob Merski said this issue has been on their minds since early July when residents living downtown came to council upset about being harassed for money and being followed to their cars or apartments by aggressive panhandlers.

Downtown businesses have also complained about the issue.

Council members said violators will now receive a warning and face possible fines.
