Wayne Park, on Erie's east side, has long been bordered by neighborhood schools but it never had a playground…until now.

A dedication ceremony for the new playground was held today inside East Middle School. The idea for the project came about six years ago by the board of directors of the Hamot Health Foundation.

The board recruited many community partners to help raise the $150,000 needed for the work. Construction was recently completed and the playground has already been busy.

"Although it took us some time, the Hamot Health Foundation Board of Directors, along with a lot of community leaders, we pulled our money together through some grants from Erie County and others, and we were able to build this gorgeous playground.  It's been a labor of love for sure,” said Boo Hagerty, the foundation’s Chief Development Officer.

Students at East Middle School will care for the playground, and the entire park, by picking up litter and maintaining a school garden.
