The family of four children killed in the Erie day care fire in August is extending a thank you to the community for their support during the tragedy.

The Overton and Jones families lost La’Myhia Jones, 8; Luther Jones Jr., 6; Ava Jones, 4; and Jaydan Augustyniak, 9 months, in the fire.

They were among five children killed when a fire broke out a Harris Family Daycare on W. 11th St. in Erie on Aug. 11.

The investigation into the fire revealed the day care only had one smoke detector in the attic. The fire originated by a couch in a first-floor living room and appears to be accidental due to an overloaded electrical cord, according to Erie Fire Chief Guy Santone.

Pennsylvania's Office of Child Development and Early Learning is performing fire safety checks during every initial, renewal, unannounced and complaint inspection as of Sept. 16, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Teresa Miller announced last week.
