ALBANY, NY (Erie News Now)--GOOD CAUSE EVICTION IS THE NAME OF A POTENTIAL POLICY IN THE BUDGET THAT INTENDS TO SET LIMITS ON HOW MUCH LANdLORDS CAN RAISE RENT AND PROHIBIT EVICTION WITHOUT GOOD REASON.

THROUGHOUT NEGOTIATIONS THE POLICY HAS BEEN MET WITH INCREASING CONTROVERSY.

REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS CONTINUE TO push back SAYING THIS WILL HURT THE STATE'S ABILITY TO BUILD MORE HOUSING UNITS AND ADDRESS THE HOUSING CRISIS.

“Good cause is nothing more than a direct attack on private property rights in this state," said Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt (R-62nd Senate District).

WHILE DEMOCRATS CONTINUE TO STAND STRONG IN THEIR STANCE THAT GOOD CAUSE EVICTION IS AN IMPORTANT ELEMENT OF TENANT PROTECTIONS THAT SHOULD BE IN THE FINAL BUDGET.

“I think the promise quite honestly of why we are still talking is because I think each of us understands, the houses, the Governor understands that we can collectively move the ball forward doing the things we want to do as well as progressing in terms of building,” said Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D-35th Senate District).

SOME LANDLORDS EXPRESSed OPPOSITION TO GOOD CAUSE WORRYING ABOUT BEING LIMITED ON THE RENTS INCREASES THEY CAN SET.

“Good cause is not a protection, it’s a transfer of property rights, they’re seizing basically my property and giving it to the tenant and to the government,” said Lincoln Eccles, a property manager.

ECCLES SAid wHAT TENANTS REALLY NEED IS MORE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO PAY THEIR RENT.

THE FINAL BUDGET WAS EXTENDED AGAIN on Thursday pushing the new deadline to early next week.
