UPMC is planning to lay off more than 1,000 of its employees due to post-pandemic healthcare challenges, according to a statement Wednesday.

We're told the reductions primarily impact non-clinical, non-member-facing, administrative staff throughout UPMC's health system. The layoffs are being done through attrition, the closing of open positions, elimination of redundancies and other means.

Severance pay and benefits coverage are being provided to affected workers.

The layoffs affect a little more than one percent of staff throughout UPMC’s 100,000+ workforce.

UPMC representatives did not respond to Erie News Now's request, asking how many employees at UPMC Hamot or working in northwestern Pennsylvania may be affected.
