As the summer tourist season approaches, Presque Isle State Park is boosting cellular phone service for some of its visitors.

PA Reps. Pat Harkins and Bob Merski, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and AT&T have teamed up, to boost cell service on Presque Isle.

AT&T has added equipment to the existing PA State Police radio tower.

"We added sine antennas," said AT&T PA President David Kerr. "We also added a microwave dish that provides what we call back call, so think of it as the connectivity of the internet."

The additional equipment will provide AT&T customers with better cell service and internet connection.

"It will benefit our customers with additional coverage and capacity so they should see speedier use of their mobile device," said Kerr. "They should see better coverage, commonly thought of as bars. You should see new bars where you didn't see them both on the beaches and in the surf shop, or anything else in building here."

The upgrades will also improve public safety, by preventing calls from being dropped for both park rangers and state police.

"We heard from citizens that this was a big need," said Merski. "Calls were being dropped. They weren't able to connect and when there is a safety issue on Presque Isle, especially in boats. It's very important that people be able to connect with Presque Isle, having over one million visitors a year."

According to Kerr, the additional site was turned on just days before the eclipse, and the park is already seeing improvements.
