Art's Bakery owner Todd Sutton is dedicated to fighting hunger.

Sutton's bakery has started a new partnership with the Erie City Mission to address food waste.

The bakery will provide the non-profit with baked goods that would typically be thrown away.

"Primarily, it will mostly be breads that we would do, but we will also do cookies and maybe around Thanksgiving we will do pies," said Sutton. "To now be in a business ownership position when we can do this a lot more, intentionally on a lot bigger scale, definitely feels good."

The Erie City Mission helps feed nearly 200 people every day.

However, as summer approaches, those numbers are expected to rise.

"Obviously, coming up to the end of the school year, our numbers will increase as the free lunch program for schools starts to end, and students are finding a way to come here during the school day," said Erie City Mission Director of Development Erin Layden. "We serve lunches daily, but what we don't think about is what do they do during the week, and so part of our food program provides an area where they can come in and grab groceries."

Sutton's employees say it's their way of giving back to the community by helping those in need.

"You never know how close you are to homelessness until you're actually there," said Art's Bakery sales manager Taylor Warren. "You can't get out of it unless you have an open hand."

According to Layden, each donation will go a long way.

"We want to thank Art's," said Layden. "I think it's important that those who want to give back are connecting with other organizations that have the means to do so, and so if anybody is ever interested in partnering with us, we'd love to talk to them."
