A bill sponsored by state Rep. Aerion A. Abney (D-Allegheny) aimed at expanding access to mental health services and reducing licensing barriers for social workers has passed the Pennsylvania House with strong bipartisan support.
House Bill 554 would allow Pennsylvania to join the Social Work Licensure Compact, enabling licensed social workers to practice across state lines without redundant licensing processes.
Supporters say the compact will improve behavioral health care access in underserved areas and help attract and retain skilled professionals.
“As a trained social worker and legislator, I’ve seen how red tape can get in the way of real solutions,” Abney said. “This legislation helps break down barriers—giving social workers more flexibility and giving Pennsylvanians more access to the mental health services they need.”
The bill now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
