State: Drive Responsibly Ahead of Labor Day Weekend

As Labor Day weekend approaches, Pennsylvania officials are asking people to be safe as they celebrate.
Pennsylvania State Police and local police have already been cracking down on impaired driving. The effort is funded by more than $6.2 million from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The goal is to reduce the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths caused by impaired drivers.
Over Labor Day weekend last year (Aug. 30 to Sept. 2), there were 1,002 crashes across the state, officials said. Those crashes resulted in 13 deaths and 722 injuries. 106 of those crashes were alcohol-related.
“These numbers should be zero,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll said. “Crashes involving impaired drivers are completely preventable. If your celebration includes alcohol or drugs, make a plan to get home safely without getting behind the wheel impaired. Never choose to drive impaired.”
The safety initiative will run through Sept. 1.
