Part of Erie’s Bayfront Parkway is set to close to traffic after the Labor Day holiday, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) said in a reminder Tuesday.

Starting Tuesday, Sept. 2, the parkway will close between Sassafras St. Ext. and Holland St. including the State St. intersection. The closure is part of a major reconstruction project and is expected to last about a year.

PennDOT is urging drivers to plan ahead and use detours on W. 12th St. (Route 5) and Greengarden Blvd.

Access to waterfront destinations, including hotels and restaurants, will remain open via West and East Front St. Safety upgrades, such as speed humps, crosswalks, and temporary signals, are already in place, with additional improvements to follow.

The project will feature a grade-separated intersection at State St., shorter crosswalks, and new traffic signals. Plans also include a roundabout and pedestrian bridge near Holland Street.

According to PennDOT, these changes are designed to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
