A workers' safety bill, introduced by State Representative Pat Harkins, is moving forward. The bill is named after mechanic Jake Schwab, who lost his life as a result of an accident inside the EMTA garage in 2014.
Transit authorities, school districts, and state and local governments, do not have to abide by OSHA safety standards. Harkins' bill would give public workers the same safety protection given to workers employed in the private sector.
Harkins announced today that a public hearing on the bill has been scheduled.
"I'm on the Labor Committee, and I was able to negotiate a deal where we can have a hearing in Harrisburg in mid-September. We're going to try to get all the stakeholders and all those who want to weigh-in on the legislation. It is critical to the working person," he said.
Harkins worked hard to get the hearing scheduled in September. That would pave the way for a vote to be taken before the end of this legislative session.
