An unidentified 16-year-old male was shot in the neck in the neighborhood near W. 29th St. and Cherry St. just before 5 p.m. this evening.
He was taken to UPMC Hamot, where police say he is in stable condition.
At least five suspects, likely more, were taken into police custody following the shooting, with police saying they were all on the "younger" side.
Police said they have two people they plan to charge, one adult and one juvenile.
20-year-old Orguna Sanders Jr. and 15-year-old Shmad Page, who is charged as an adult, face multiple charges including aggravated assault for allegedly returning fire.
For residents living in the neighborhood, this is an unfortunately common occurrence. In just the past year-and-a-half, at least four people 18 years old and younger have been shot in the area, including Wednesday's shooting.
At least one victim, Kalvin Davis, 18, died from a gunshot after he was shot in the head while sleeping on July 1, 2021.
"This neighborhood right here has had a significant amount of gunplay over the past two years," said Erie Chief of Police, Dan Spizarny.
When asked, many neighbors were too frightened to go on camera, saying they didn't want to be seen talking about something so close to home.
Philip Ward returned to the scene of the crime to talk to neighbors and business owners on Thursday, a day after the shooting occurred.
One neighbor said she had just picked up her granddaughter from school and brought her into the house and then all of a sudden, gunshots rang out.
She said her and her granddaughter were so terrified that she had to make different arrangements for her to get to school today.
Another neighbor Sam Catania, who is also the owner of Sam Catania Painting, said this neighborhood is how he makes a living.
His business is right across the street from where the shooting happened and one of his vans now has a bullet hole in it. And as he explains his employee who was in the van when it got hit was just simply going home at the end of the day.
"One of my employees was leaving at the end of the day and he was heading north on Cherry Street," said Catania. "There's nothing coming and then coming in hot was an SUV caught him down at the light and he got caught in the crossfire."
