The  recent death of a Chautauqua County high school football player has now led to the cancellation of the rest of the season.

The school board has voted to scrap the rest of the season for the Westfield-Brocton team after the death of 16 year old Damon Janes. He was hurt during a game and later died.

In Westfield today, some people told us they were surprised. But most people supported the decision, hoping it will allow the community to continue to heal.

Father Joseph Walter of St. Dominic Catholic Church said, "The point of it isn't moving away from the football. The point is being able to move toward the grief and grieve well."

Assistant Football Coach Scott Lashbrook said, "I think the board, superintendent, and principals have the absolutely best interest in their hearts for these children. We're hurting. We lost  a great young man."

The school board members say they made the decision with input from the players.
