At any given moment, volunteer firefighters must be ready to respond to an emergency call.
But one department relies on the help of man's best friend while serving our community.
The Fairfield Fire Department raises and trains search and rescue dogs. They have a total of four dogs, including two Newfoundland dogs, which are trained in water rescue.
The department also has two Bloodhounds, which are trained in tracking.
According to the Fairfield Firefighter Jeff Hawryliw, they are one of the few departments in the county to use dog teams, which have become a vital part of that department.
“We try to offer our community the most protection whether it be fire, EMS, rescue or service calls,” said Hawryliw. “We do everything we can to help our community and this is a unique aspect of the fire service."
