The long stalled Union Square project in Erie's mid-town, may finally move forward.

Well known local businessman Rick Griffith, the owner of the nearby Lovell Place apartment complex, has agreed to buy six mostly vacant properties, from the Erie Redevelopment Authority. The authority agreed to sell, after plans stalled to develop the area between 13th-14th Streets, Peach to State.

Griffith says he plans to build up to 20 rental units.

He said, "You would drive in. There would be a U-shaped crop of apartments. One or two bedrooms each, each with a kitchen, living room, modern amenities, and the interesting thing is for downtown, an attached garage for every single unit."

Only 2 of the 7 townhouses built in phase one of the Union Square project have been sold.
