While many unions celebrate Labor Day, the holiday comes with a sense of uncertainty for some postal service workers.

Tonight, the U.S. Postal Service and the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) still haven’t reached a new contract.

According APWU Erie President Joe Szocki, the company wants to create a new entry-level position at a lower wage with no benefits.  Szocki says the company also wants a higher percentage of part time employees, which are changes that the union refuses to accept.

Another concern is the future of the East 38th Street sorting facility.  It was scheduled to close back in April and move operations to Pittsburgh, but the closure was delayed.  Erie's mail is now postmarked in Pittsburgh and sent back to Erie for delivery.

"Perhaps legislation will come together, the plant will get cancellations back, the mail will be more valuable to the community, there won't be delays,” said Szocki.  “All those are key things that we believe in for the service of the customers, that the postal service has stayed from."

The company declined to comment on the negotiations.
