Erie County officials confirm that the Ohio kidnapping suspect, who was also charged in the beating and murder of Erie woman, Kum Miller, was found unresponsive in his cell at the county prison at 1618 Ash Street Sunday afternoon.  Erie County Deputy Coroner Dennis Suscheck pronounced the suspect, Kyle Micah Johnson, 25, dead at 3:50 p.m. Sunday at UPMC Hamot Trauma Center.

According to county officials, prison staff found Johnson hanging and unresponsive in his cell at 3:10 p.m., performed CPR attempting to revive him, and called 9-1-1. An Emergycare ambulance was dispatched to the Erie County Prison at about 3:37 p.m. Dispatchers put out the call for a "suicidal man."  Police Chief Bowers says when Erie police officers arrived at the prison, Johnson had already been transported to the trauma center. The coroner's office has scheduled an autopsy on the inmate's body at 1:00 p.m. Monday.

Erie County District Attorney Jack Daneri and Erie Police Chief Randy Bowers tell Erie News Now that Erie police and Erie County detectives are both investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the inmate.

Erie County Director of Administration Gary Lee told Erie News Now that Kyle Johnson was on a suicide watch in the prison, when the apparent suicide happened.  Lee says Prison Warden Kevin Sutter and top prison management are conducting an internal review of the incident. He could not say when the inmate was last seen alive. District Attorney Jack Daneri plans to comment on the matter on Monday.
